The upcoming Surface launch this autumn will take place this year without the two fixed starters. At least that’s what sources close to Microsoft say, who claims the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop 4 won’t hit the market until 2021.
It’s a global economic crisis that appears to be forcing Microsoft to postpone two fixed starters in the Surface universe expected for October 2020. As reported on the Windows Latest website based on information from people familiar with the situation, Microsoft is reluctant to unveil a successor to the Surface Pro 7 or Surface Laptop 3 at the upcoming Surface launch event.
Instead, the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop 4, which will likely feature Intel’s new 11th Gen Tiger Lake processors. Both laptops won’t be available until the first half of 2021. However, the website warns that plans may change ahead of the event. In any case, two new Surface products and various new accessories are currently scheduled for the fall event.
Many details, such as specific pricing, are already known for the Surface Laptop 12.5, which, codenamed Sparti, is not a successor to the current model. But a smaller and cheaper clamshell laptop with at least 4GB of storage. RAM and 64GB SSD should be at the top. It is also known that Microsoft is likely to replace last year’s Surface Pro X ARM tablet with a successor. This Surface Pro X 2 could be powered by Microsoft’s SQ2 processor based on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen2 and will thus also support 5G.
The online magazine Windows Latest writes about this and also notes that these two Surface devices will not play a role in the upcoming Surface event. For now, Microsoft is expected to hold the Surface event in October, just like in previous years. Microsoft also brings a large number of device updates. So far, recently introduced Surface devices have hit the market quickly, at least in the US.
Now it is said that Microsoft wants to drop the launch this year, mostly for “tactical” reasons. The group is said to release the Surface Laptop 4 this year rather than the Surface Pro 8 as the economic situation calls for it. At a possible event in October, Microsoft will only unveil an updated version of the ARM-based Surface Pro X. In addition, there may be new accessories.
Microsoft itself hardly publishes any information about the scheduled event or devices ahead of time. It all remains speculation until the event takes place.
