iPhone 12: Apple is said to have 120 Hz displays, but not the drivers

The next Apple smartphone is likely to be released a little later than usual, because, according to all the information, the iPhone 12 will not be presented in September, but in October. As it looks, it is already known, there are still many questions about technical characteristics.

There have been various leaks about the design of the iPhone 12, and within a few weeks, it was more or less certain what the Apple device would look like. However, many technical questions remain unanswered. One concerns the display: It has long been speculated that the iPhone 12 might have a 120Hz display.

Limiting 60 Hz in software

There were early signs of this, namely the ability in the iOS 14 beta to limit the refresh rate to 60Hz. This “barrier” for frames was interesting because the iPhone 11 only has a 60Hz panel anyway. is, so the limitation on the part of the software may actually only indicate a higher frequency in the successor model, according to Apple experts.

Since then, there has been a lot of speculation about whether the iPhone 12 could have a 120Hz panel. There have also been reports that the top two models may have had such a display. In addition, there was and is a suspicion that the iPhone 12 screen will theoretically support 120Hz, but Apple will not activate this feature out of the box to save battery power.

iPhone 12 buyers will be disappointed. The smartphone will receive an outdated 60-Hz screen

Those wishing to buy an iPhone with a 120 Hz screen will have to wait another year. Ross Young, founder of research companies Display Supply Chain Consultants and DisplaySearch, said that 120Hz screens simply don’t have time to add to the iPhone 12, so fans of Apple smartphones will likely have to wait another year.

The high refresh rate has become closely associated with the flagship smartphones of 2020. Today, 120Hz screens are considered the new standard, 90Hz displays are heavily used in the mid-range segment, and 60Hz screens are considered obsolete. Apparently, the iPhone 12 will receive a 60Hz screen.

The release of the iPhone, judging by numerous insider leaks of information, will be delayed until October this year. The reason lies in supply problems. Ross Young clarified that Apple was able to get 120Hz display panels for the Pro versions of the iPhone 12, but the display driver chips have not yet arrived on assembly lines.

Now Apple will either have to push the iPhone release date even further to wait for the missing components or release the iPhone 12 with 60Hz screens. Ross Young heard from his informants that Apple chose the second option

The 120Hz screen was supposed to be one of the highlights of the iPhone this year, but it was recently reported that the iPhone 12 will be “the same iPhone with an improved camera, more RAM and an Apple A14
