Microsoft today Presented a significantly smaller and cheaper alternative to Xbox Series X. Which should support most of the important functions of the expensive next-generation console despite the price of only 299 euros. But the design is suspiciously reminiscent of a loudspeaker … or more of a washing machine?

After the Xbox Series X was clearly modeled after a refrigerator, the company finally showed a few hours ago what the cheaper Xbox Series S will look like. But not all fans are enthusiastic about the look of the console because the rectangular box with the round, black grille for the fan is a bit reminiscent of … other objects.

And there are quite a few creative tweets, from the Plankton Special Edition to the McDrive switch to the inevitable comparisons with washing machines and loudspeakers – Microsoft certainly saw that coming. If you don’t like the design of the console yet, you should wait and see: Microsoft could soon be presenting nice special editions, and as the fan concepts show, these could look much more appealing.

The Xbox Series S will do without a Blu-ray drive, so games can only be purchased and downloaded digitally. Despite the recommended retail price of just 299 euros, the console should be able to display games at up to 120 frames per second, even if only in a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels instead of full 4K. After all, the games are to be upscaled to 4K, streaming services are also supported in the higher resolution. The NVMe SSD remains fast, but the capacity drops from 1 TB to only 512 GB.
