Ryzen Threadripper PRO: Leak reveals everything about a new Intel nightmare

AMD plans to launch the new high-performance processors of the Ryzen Threadripper PRO series, as it was last week. Details of four of these processors for powerful desktop PCs and professional workstations have already leaked.

|Four new Threadripper CPUs with expanded functionality

AMD’s plans for the Ryzen Threadripper PRO series were recently unveiled based on unofficial details about the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX. Thanks to unofficially published presentation slides from the chip manufacturer. The information is now available on three other models of the processor series and previously unknown specifications. Particularly impressive is the fact that Threadripper Pro will not only have access to eight instead of four memory channels compared to previous Threadripper models but can also offer 128 instead of 64 PCI Express 4.0 lanes.

According to available information, the new family of high-end desktop processors consists of Threadripper PRO 3945WX (12 cores, 24 threads), 3955WX (16 cores, 32 threads), 3975WX (32 cores, 64 threads) and 3995WX (64 cores, 128 threads) together. All these processors are based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture, support up to 2 terabytes of EEC working memory with eight memory channels, and thanks to 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, they support several particularly fast PCIe 4.0 SSDs. In addition, AMD indicates all chips with a thermal rated power (TDP) of 280 watts, which corresponds to the current Threadripper 3000 series.

|PRO stands for the highest hardware requirements

Differences between the new PRO models and the regular Threadripper 3000 series can also be detected at maximum gain frequencies. Although the latter has a maximum clock speed of 4.5 gigahertz, the Threadripper PRO series has a maximum gain frequency of 4.3 gigahertz. In addition, similar to the Ryzen PRO series, AMD technologies are specifically designed for the business environment. These include “Pro Security”, “Pro Manageability” and “PRO Business”, that is, advanced features for the areas of security and system administration, as well as a manufacturer’s guarantee for high stability and reliability.

|Intel will soon have to tremble in the professional segment too

It is interesting to see how AMD classifies known and future stream ripper processors. The company sees the Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series with a 24-, 32- and 64-core processor and support for up to 256 gigabytes of RAM as the basis of a desktop platform for games, streaming and video editing. However, with the new Threadripper 3000 PRO series, AMD wants to focus on professional design and development studios, engineers, and scientists. Intel’s major competitor must also be under pressure in this expensive and therefore profitable market segment.

There is currently no pricing information for Threadripper PRO processors. However, some details that are still missing are likely to appear very soon, as rumors are already awaiting the launch of processors on Tuesday, July 14, 2020.
