AMD: Ryzen notebooks will soon come with MediaTek 5G modems

Mobile connectivity will also play a more important role in AMD in the future. it is said that they hope to cooperate with Taiwanese expert MediaTek (MediaTek). MediaTek can not only provide WiFi but also provide 5G solutions for laptops and other mobile systems.

As Taiwanese industrial service provider DigiTimes reported, MediaTek, a chipmaker specializing in mobile processors will not only cooperate with Intel but also with its main rival AMD. At least this is what the industry insiders say in Taiwan.

It starts with WiFi 6, 5G will follow later

According to the report, AMD hopes that MediaTek will provide it with customized Wi-Fi 6 dedicated ASIC chips. The cooperation between the two parties will be expanded in the future and will also cover the development of 5G modems. You can imagine whether you plan to use a complete SoC with AMD CPU core and graphics unit with a 5G modem jointly developed by MediaTek. But it is still completely open. According to reports, this should be a long-term plan, and the two companies hope to work together on many projects.

Intel and MediaTek announced not long ago that Taiwanese partners will soon launch Intel-based laptops with 5G modems. The first models of HP and Dell should be put on the market with appropriate equipment in early 2021. Of course, these are solutions that install a 5G modem in addition to the CPU with an integrated graphics solution.

The Asian report has not yet revealed when MediaTek’s first AMD-based notebooks and convertible PCs with WLAN chips or 5G modems will be available. Through the new cooperation, Intel and AMD may be trying, among other things, to fight against Windows 10 devices equipped with Qualcomm’s ARM-based chips with stable online connections.
